You can make the best film you possibly can. But if you haven’t figured out how to finance it, sell it, and get it in front of an audience, you’re missing a big part of the process. That’s why I want to talk about the five pillars of independent film.

These are five positions that help move a project from an idea to something people can actually watch. When you understand what each one does, you’re in a much better position to put your movie together and build a plan to revenue.

Understanding the Five Pillars of Independent Film

I’m talking about producers, investors and financiers, sales agents, distributors, and exhibitors and platforms. These are the people who help get your film made, sold, and seen.

Okay, so why does this matter to you? Because a lot of producers focus only on making the film. They’re thinking about the script, the cast, and the shoot. Those things matter. But you also need to understand how your film is going to get out into the world.

1) Producers Put the Project Together

The producer develops the project, raises the financing, and hires the director. They may also help assemble the cast and bring together the different pieces needed to make the movie.

If you’re producing, you need to think beyond getting through the shoot. Who is going to sell your film? Who is going to release it? You don’t have to do every job yourself, but you should understand how those jobs connect.

2) Investors and Financiers Make It Possible

Investors and financiers put money into the project to get it going. You’ll often see these people involved as executive producers. Without financing, you don’t have the money to make the film.

That’s why these relationships carry so much weight. If you want someone to invest in your movie, you should be thinking about what happens after production. Making the film is one step. Having a path to revenue is another essential part of the conversation.

3) Sales Agents Sell Your Film Around the World

Sales agents sell your film to buyers in different territories. Usually, when I’m talking about sales agents, I’m talking about international sales. They help your movie reach markets outside the United States and Canada.

You could make a film without thinking about any of this. A lot of people do. But if you have sales agent relationships and understand where your film might sell, you have a better foundation for your project.

4) Distributors Get Your Film Released

Distributors get your movie onto platforms, into theaters, and out to audiences. When we’re talking about domestic distribution, we’re usually talking about the United States and Canada.

Now, many companies do both jobs. They sell internationally and distribute domestically. As things evolve, some also distribute directly in international markets. So when you’re talking to a company, understand what they actually do and where they do it.

5) Exhibitors and Platforms Reach the Audience

Exhibitors are the people running theaters. They show your film and share revenue with the distributor. Streaming services and other viewing platforms are also part of this final step: making your movie available for people to watch.

That revenue can then work its way back through the companies involved and, hopefully, back to you. Understanding that path matters. Getting your movie made is a huge achievement, but reaching an audience is part of the job, too.

Think of the five pillars of independent film as the foundation of your project. Build those relationships, ask questions, and figure out your plan to revenue. Follow me for more, and check out FilmmakingStuff.com.
